Great news for Laurewood Inn guests that want to enjoy skiing, tubing or snowboarding at Sapphire Valley Ski Area.  We can offer 25% off their list rates if you are staying with us.  The weather forecast this week is for cold temperatures starting tonight, so Sapphire will be blowing lots of snow!

All of us at Laurelwood Inn want to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas!  Our stockings are hung and now we are just waiting for Christmas Day to arrive!

Our girls are home from college and we have been busy baking and entertaining friends. Always so fun to actually take the time to have friends for dinner.  Why do we wait until Christmas to do this?

I will keep this short as I know you all are busy getting ready for Christmas also!  We would love to see you soon! We still have rooms left for the holiday week ahead so call or book online now.

Merry Christmas!  May the joy of this season fill your hearts as we celebrate the birth of our Savior!

Fun things to do for Christmas in the Cashiers-Highlands area.

Hard to believe it is December!  The Christmas season is upon us and there are many activities going on in and around our area.  If you don't have your Christmas tree yet, now is the perfect time to visit one of the many choose and cut farms in our area! This is a great family friendly event and will create memories for years to come!
Tom Sawyers Farm has some great tips on caring for your fresh tree along with another page for top 10 myths about trees.

You also don't want to miss the parades going on in our towns.  The Highlands parade is December 7th at 11am.  The Cashiers parade is the following Saturday, December 14th also at 11am.  The Cashiers parade starts at the Cornucopia restaurant and makes it way to the center of town, then turns left onto Hwy 64 and ends at the Community Center.  If you stay at Laurelwood Inn all you have to do is walk across the street for great viewing of the parade!

At the end of the Cashiers parade route there will be an event called "Cashiers Cares". This event benefits many of our local organizations. A free lunch and photos with Santa are a part of this event!

10 Things to do in the winter months in Cashiers, NC

The fall leaves are still pretty but the morning temperatures along with the time change are starting to make it feel more like winter is near!  Many people think that Cashiers just shuts down after the leaves fall!  But that's not true! Yes, it does slow down and some of the restaurants and shops close, but there are still plenty of fun things that make a visit in the winter a great choice! So here is my list of top 10 things to do (in no particular order) if you visit over the next few months.

1) Hiking-Yes, the trails all stay open and I think the views are even better with many of the leaves gone.

2) Eat!  I just created a Google map that shows all the restaurants open along with their hours!  Just click on the restaurant you are interested in and it will show you their winter hours. Click here

3) Read a good book in our new lobby. Stay cozy and warm by the fireplace. We even have a book swap shelf so if you need a book, just grab one along with a cup of coffee from the pot we keep going.

4) Get your Christmas tree. If you have ever driven around our area you know there are a lot of Christmas tree farms and plenty of places to choose and cut your own tree. Tom Sawyer's place even has an Elf Village you can visit. Watch our site for package deals that include a tree!

5) Go skiing, snowboarding or tubing -We have a hill just 5 min. from Laurelwood Inn. This is a great place to spend the day.  Their website has all the information including updates on snow conditions. Once again, we will be offering ski packages, so check our site soon. You can also click this link for more info about  Sapphire Valley

6) December 14th is our annual Christmas parade! This is always a fun event for the  whole family.

7) Build a snowman!

8) Shopping!  Many of the shops in Cashiers and Highlands stay open year round!

9) Visit the waterfalls. They never close and are so beautiful in the winter, especially when ice starts to form around them.

10) Walk through The Bascom- This amazing art center in Highlands is open all year. Wonderful exhibits, art instruction and other events are offered. Admission is free. Click here for more information.

Laurelwood Inn is open year round, so visit our website to book a room!

Fall photos from Cashiers, NC

I can't believe how pretty it still is around here with just a few days left in October.  The leaves are just coming into their peak.  Laurelwood Inn looks amazing! I've decided to just let the photos speak for themselves!  I took all of these this morning on my cell phone!

The photo above is showing the side of the "300's" building. All rooms have a king bed.

Here is a view of the main building.

You see this from our front porch!

This is a side view of the log suites building.

And this last photo is the road beside us. (Where you park for the 300's building)

I think it is going to be really pretty for at least another few weeks, so not to late for a trip to the mountains!  There are several fun events coming up.  This Friday there is a family friendly event called Goblins on the Green. And be sure to check out the Highlands Culinary Weekend starting the 7th of November.  Highlands is only 10 miles away and a really fun side trip if you are staying in Cashiers.

Our Groupon deal ends tomorrow so check out our great winter/spring special at their site!  Hope to see you all soon!  Lise

Elk!

Mary and Bob enjoyed their backpacking trip on The Foothills Trail. We are so blessed to have all of this in our backyard!  There are many great day hikes along this river.  Just ask and we can point you in the right direction! Here is their view from where they slept:

The Cashiers area is beautiful right now! The leaves are close to peak and our town is busy with "leaf lookers" enjoying the area.  Here are a few photos taken this past week:

Bob and I went to Cataloochee last night to see the elk.  For those of you that don't know, the elk were reintroduced back into this area and are doing really well!  There is a great place to view them just over an hour drive from here.  They are amazing animals and so exciting to see them up close!  This is really worth the drive over to see them!  I will be happy to give you directions.

It appears we are finally going to be getting some cold weather in our area. They are forecasting low temperatures into the 30's for Wednesday and Thursday nights!  You can bet we will have a fire in our fireplace!

Just a reminder that our deal on Groupon ends next week. You can book stays into March but you must purchase this by next Monday night.  Go to http://www.groupon.com/deals/ga-bk-laurelwood-inn for more information!

Hope to see you soon!  Lise

Welcome to the Laurelwood Blog!

It's fall in the mountains!

I can't believe how beautiful the mountains are right now!  Laurelwood Inn is busy with guests coming to enjoy the leaves!  Cashiers has a busy weekend planned with a large arts and craft show at Sapphire Valley.  Just had to brag about our sign. Elizabeth, one of the twins, was home on fall break with some friends and they took over decorating our sign for fall! Didn't they do a great job?

We just broke a winter special with Groupon, so if you have any plans to come over the winter be sure to check out http://www.groupon.com/deals/ga-bk-laurelwood-inn   The deal must be purchased by the end of October but we have dates available for your stay into March!

In other news, yesterday Bob and our daughter Mary set out on a back packing trip for the weekend. They will be hiking part of The Foothills Trail. They even took our dog Bailey!  You can see from the photo I took how excited they all look!
I sure hope they don't encounter this guy that has been hanging around Cashiers! This is a photo from our neighbors backyard!
Well, hope you are enjoying fall, my favorite season!  Please check out our special and come see us soon!
